Rob: There are two reasons for doing the singles. Firstly it’s a chance for the band to do something a bit more compact, and secondly it’s a chance for the live band to do their stuff. Also Tina gets to write the lyrics. Magenta’s quite a broad concept, really.
Christina: One of my favourite authors is Anne Rice, who wrote The Vampire Chronicles, and when I heard the music to "Broken," it just conjured up those sorts of images for me. It's all about The Undead!
Rob: It was good to revisit Call Me. It was one of the first songs I ever wrote – back when I was at school, I wrote on the piano in the school hall. It was when Cyan was a band at school, and my brother (Steve, of course) was singing. We’d gone into the studio for the first time and recorded it as a demo, but years later when we put it on the first Cyan album, I tried singing it and it sounded awful, so we did it as an instrumental. When we came to do the Broken single, we thought it would be great to get Tina to sing the original lyrics, and with Chris’ guitar solo at the end it came to life. It’s been really popular live, too.
Steve: Call me is about a man whose wife has died – and he almost feels he can see her. It’s about the love he has for his wife, and how he can’t go on without her. It was written when Rob and I were both teenagers. We were going to do it on the Cyan “For King and Country” album, when I was singing with the bad, but neither Rob nor I could sing it. In fact I think that even Christina had a go at one point a few years ago, but since Rob has lowered the key a little.
