Rob: Both King of the Skies and I’m Alive are a bit rockier. When we came to do those, I’d been listening to a lot more Led Zeppelin and some Emo rock stuff. Tina and I are continually writing, anyway, and it allowed us to try a different style without affecting the albums. Pride was originally written with that “Directors cut” opening, but I didn’t like it, so I took it off. Later I found it on a rough demo, and quite liked it so I worked it up and put it on the single. Actually, there’s also another version of Pride with a completely different opening!
Christina: Both songs came from books I’d read. I’m Alive came from reading the Davinci Code – and is loosely based on the supposed relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene – but is also just about being in love. King of the Skies was inspired by a book I read about Boudica, the English Queen at the time of the Roman occupation. The words “Am I worth dying for” relate to the relationship she had with her lover – it’s a quite a ballsy song about a ballsy lady. The songs were inspired by those sources, but can also be interpreted as straight love songs, though not especially personal to me. Rob and I wrote both songs together, so I was involved in the vocal melodies for them as well, whereas Rob, of course, writes the vocal melodies on the albums.
